For the Japanese manufacturer Mazda, the development of new models is a priority, and the all-new 2023 CX-90, which will show up here in the next few months, is a striking example.
Designed to meet the needs of families, it picks up Mazda’s characteristic features and dynamism, but will add a number of even more advanced features.
This new Mazda SUV will quickly find its audience, as it will replace the large Mazda CX-9, offering space for seven passengers and even more advanced mechanics.
New Mazda SUV: Dynamic and Stylish
Make no mistake, the 2023 CX-90 will not deny its family heritage. It will feature an evolution of the Kodo design, the soul of the movement, but will add aesthetic innovations such as more refined headlights and a better-defined hood. A long, lowered roofline will give it a more dynamic and muscular appearance.
The big news, however, will be the interior of the Mazda CX-90, which will highlight three rows of seats in a more elaborate design package than ever before.
Here, it should be recalled that Mazda Canada has been committed to superior quality for the past few years. Sophisticated materials, custom woodwork and quality leather are now part of the Japanese manufacturer’s SUVs.
Is Mazda a luxury brand? Not really, because the philosophy behind the new models, and the Mazda CX-90 in particular, is to offer a well thought-out, durable and reliable vehicle that is still affordable, but with a more sophisticated personality.
2023 Mazda CX-90: Hybrid and Efficient
Like other Mazda SUVs, the 2023 Mazda CX-90 will feature a 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. While the presence of a Mazda electric SUV in this segment has not yet been confirmed, we do know that the Mazda CX-90 will be offered in an electrified version.
This new large vehicle will be one of the first Mazda hybrid SUVs, benefiting from the same technology developed in Europe for the CX-60, a vehicle that will never arrive in Canada. But the technology will be de rigueur.
The Mazda brand already has several engines, which it will supplement in the 2023 CX-90. However, it will add a new variant, with a plug-in hybrid engine. Here are the established engines, although it’s not yet known which powertrain will be chosen for Mazda’s new SUV:
- 155-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder
- 187-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder
- 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder turbo with 250 horsepower
The Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or PHEV powertrain, developed in collaboration with Toyota, includes the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a 100-kilowatt electric motor that adds 134 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The total power announced is 323 horsepower, and torque will peak at 369 pound-feet, making it one of the most powerful engines of its kind. An electric range of 63 kilometers is expected.
This same technology has been put to the test by some Québec experts, who were impressed by its efficiency and versatility, as well as its driving pleasure, as Sylvain Raymond of RPM states:
“Where the Mazda CX-90 stands out from other plug-in hybrid SUVs is in its dynamism and driving pleasure.”
Mazda CX-90, A Vehicle Designed for the Family
As we know, Mazda relies on driving sensations - thanks to the SkyActiv G system - and on the quality of the finish to define its personality. Safety and versatility are also a core concern. The long list of standard and optional Mazda car accessories is evident.
The large CX-90 SUV will obviously benefit from this too. Among other things, it will feature the company’s new infotainment system, displaying cabin comfort data on a screen that’s over 11 inches wide. A first-class audio system is also available, as is a long list of safety features:
- Blind spot monitoring
- Rear cross traffic alert
- Audible lane departure warning
- Intelligent brake assist
- Front brake assist
- Large format rearview camera
- And many more
We don’t yet know the official of the 2023 Mazda CX-90 release date in Canada, nor do we know all the mechanical characteristics of this new SUV model. The best place to discover it, however, is at your Mazda dealer in Chicoutimi, in the heart of the Saguenay. Stop by L’Ami Junior Mazda to reserve yours.
